Companies will have to hire some verification system from July. The point is to make it difficult for children to access these kind of contents.

UK will be the first country in the world to demand age verification for people who see online pornography when new checks come into effect within three months, the government said on Wednesday.

Beginning July 15, commercial providers of online pornography will have to make age checks to users to ensure they are 18 years old or older. For this, they will have to hire companies that provide this type of verification.

Several verification methods will be available, including offline purchase of store viewing passes or use of a passport or online credit card.

Sites that break the new law are at risk of having their payment services withdrawn or blocked in the UK.

Government officials acknowledge that using private networks, which mask the location of a computer, allows you to overcome age checks, but that the main purpose of the law is to make it difficult for children to access pornography.

“Today, adult content is too easy for kids to access online,” said the UK’s digital and creative industries minister, Margot James.

“The introduction of mandatory age verification is a worldwide innovation, and we take the opportunity to balance privacy concerns with the need to protect children from inappropriate content.”

Sites where pornography accounts for less than a third of content will be exempt from the new requirements, provided they do not present themselves as having pornographic content.
